Another Successful Walleye School

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Fun was had by all that that participated in the Wild Eagle Lodge Walleye School this past weekend. Saturday was a brutal day on the water with wind gusts of 40 mph, which made the fishing really difficult. A few walleye were caught. Our fishing team from Ohio (Dave and Bob) landed a beautiful 30″ pike. On Sunday the weather conditions improved and it was a really nice day on the water. More walleye were caught, including a 25″ beauty when Pat (Iowa) and his sister Barb (Colorado) were in the boat with RFRG Outdoors guide, Muskie Matt. The foursome from Wisconsin (Nadine, Gary, Don and Kathy) found a nice walleye hole as well. Bob was thrilled to land a day-two tiger muskie with beautiful markings.

We couldn’t have asked for a nicer group of folks to spend the weekend with. At breakfast this morning, contact information was exchanged as fish tales from the weekend were shared. When the school started we were all strangers to one another. When it was time to say goodbye hugs and well wishes were exchanged by everyone. There was talk about doing it all over again next year. That’s what it’s all about!

A special thanks to all of the participants, the guides, and Melissa for her fantastic meals.

We’ll be posting more pictures as they are received from the participants.

Our 2011 walleye school is scheduled for May 6-8. Please check our website for more information.

Wild Eagle Lodge Fishing Update

Muskie Matt Fishing at Wild Eagle Lodge

Muskie Matt Fishing at Wild Eagle Lodge

Here’s a ice fishing report from Muskie Matt:

I was finding 5-6 inches of good clear ice with a couple inches of “white” ice in the areas that were sloppiest with slush. Other areas held that 5-6in of clear ice with another 4-5in of “white” ice or frozen slush. If you’re using a 4-wheeler be cautious but you should be ok in most areas. Our ice conditions are variable this season, 6in or less in some areas, 10in in other areas.

I put the tip-ups aside yesterday for a little panfish jigging. An affair that usually begins by drilling a bijillion holes and fishing each one looking for your quarry. Ideally air temps in the high 20′s and light wind allow for fast searching, of course I went when it was 8 degrees and wind howling pretty good making wind chills in the -5 to -10 range. Needless to say I took the one man shack with, it slows down the search process but… it’s warm! It also helped that I had an idea of where to start looking and 20 or so holes later I began to come across some crappies, two more holes and I was on them pretty good. Bad part was it took me till almost sunset and this particular lake is a “day bite”. Managed to get a good dinner for myself in 30 minutes or so, nothing huge, 10-11 inchers but damn fine eating nonetheless.

I discovered they had a preference for tiny jigs with a piece of minnow hung on it, so I began ripping my poor little crappie minnows into pieces, messy but it worked. I tried a full minnow on a bare hook under a bobber… no takers, and I tried tipping a jig with a maggot which did give up a couple fish but the chunk of minnow out-performed all.

I’d suggest starting your search over lake basin areas adjacent to weed areas they use during open water times. Crappies will usually suspend in these areas during the winter months, anywhere from 15 to 30 feet down depending on the lake being fished. Some exceptions may be lakes such as LVD where weed clumps abound across massive 12 foot or so flats areas. Then you’re looking for the “right” weed clump to fish around that particular day…

An interesting characteristic of these fish is how your presentation has to change, sometimes on a daily or even hourly basis, to get them to bite. Yesterday my bait had to be 4-5 feet off bottom and SLOWLY “waved” up n down to get a hit. Any closer to bottom and forget it, they just wouldn’t hit. Get the bait up high enough and you’d see em’ appear on the Vexilar and come up to the bait… get a hit every time that way. Modern electronics are a great help in fishing this way as it allows you to see and guage the fishes reaction to whatever you’re doing. It can be done without electronics, it’s how I started, but it’s more of a hit n miss approach in an already tricky game.

Get more ice fishing tips and reports by listening to the RFRG internet radio show tonight at 7pm.  Also stop by the Chicago Muskie Show at Harper College in Palentine, IL this coming weekend. Visit with us and Muskie Matt at the Wild Eagle Lodge booth.

Ice Shanty Parade in Eagle River

shanty

Yesterday Wild Eagle Lodge took part in the Ice Shanty Parade downtown Eagle River and welcoming Santa to town. I guess it helped ring in the season because this morning I woke up to snow covering everything. The resort is looking festive with the holiday lights sparkling off the fresh snow. I personally still have decorating and shopping to get done. I will be hitting downtown Eagle River this Friday the 4th for “Late to 8″ shopping to get those unique northwoods gifts.

Muskie Matt Fishing at Wild Eagle Lodge

Muskie Matt Fishing at Wild Eagle Lodge

Here’s a fishing update from our house guide Muskie Matt: As we near the close of yet another good muskie season we’re finding water temps are running 44-38 depending on the lake or area of a lake you’re fishing. Much warmer than normal water temps have made muskie hunting a roll of the dice. I’ve found a pattern that is usually good earlier in the fall to still be producing fish, with good consistancy. ALL my fish over the last two weeks have come on artificial baits. Not one hit on a live sucker. They’ve been swimming right by the sucker and hitting the artificial baits, weird huh? I’m still running live suckers but what an added cost… hmmmmm. Baits of choice are crankbaits worked in a pull/pause motion like jerkbaits, jerkbaits themselves, and what I call “messy baits” or those that have a very erratic pattern to their retrieve such as Reef Hogs or Undertakers. The last few days of muskie season should prove interesting with slightly colder weather moving in… hear us talking live every Sunday evening at 7pm about our area fishing on RFRG Outdoors at MuskieMatt.com, …stay tuned we’ll wrap up the season tomorrow night for you.

Thanks Matt.

Wild Eagle Lodge Fishing Update

Muskie Matt Fishing at Wild Eagle Lodge

Muskie Matt Fishing at Wild Eagle Lodge

Here’s a fishing and hunting update from Muskie Matt: Been a typical fall muskie bite. Shorter feeding windows but action can be great for that 1-3 hour “window”. Trick is you have to be out there on the water to catch that feeding spell. You never know just when that window will open on any given day. I’ve been bouncing around lakes quite a bit, that’s pretty typical for me this time of year… Plum, Tom, Crab, Twins, Banana, the Chains… fish are heavy now, even the smaller 36in fish are chubby little fellers. You can have a pretty good size fish on and underestimate its length by 4-5 inches because it looks so thick compared to its length. Jerk baits, crank baits, and live suckers have been working best for me. Anyway you look at it, it’s an adventure this time of year. They’re a hard fish to catch, weather is a dominant factor on both fish and fisherman, and the search isn’t an easy task…. but it’s hoot!
Oh, and water temps are running 36-46 depending on where and when you’re on the water.

I’ve also been out doing some scouting in the woods and I’m beginning to find deer scraps and rubs. Not a lot yet but it indicates the bucks are starting to get competitive for does in the area, which signals the start of the fall rut.

Don’t forget to tune in to the RFRG Internet Show tonight at 7pm to get all your fishing questions answered.

Muskie Matt Fishing at Wild Eagle Lodge

Muskie Matt Fishing at Wild Eagle Lodge

House fishing guide, Muskie Matt, gave me a quick fishing update:

water temps are holding in the low 40′s to high 30′s range on the ER Chain and other area lakes. Usual baits working like glide, jerk, and crank baits. I would probably lean towards the crankbaits worked in an erratic motion. That’s been giving me the best results. Kentuck Lake has been a “go to” lake this fall, fish have been very active over there. The live sucker bite is on but I’ve been taking most my fish on artificials.

Good Luck to all the fishermen.
