World Championship Snowmobile Derby

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

The Snowmobile Derby is just around the corner and is hosting two different styles of racing; ice-oval and sno-cross.  The Derby is one of the most highlighted events during the winter; spectators and racers come from all over the US and Canada to participate.  The Derby lets you choose if you want to watch the race side by side with other race fans or you can enjoy the hot seats and private suites indoors.  Make sure you mark your calendars for January 7th-January 16th so you can see for yourself why spectators return year after year.

Another great thing you can do when you’re not attending the races is hitting the trails for yourself.  The trails are beautifully groomed in the Northwoods and we have three great recommended rides to tell you about!  Our first recommendation is known as the Gangster Run which will bring you to Boulder Junction.  On this ride make sure to make a pit stop at The Little Bohemia Lodge for lunch.  This was also the site where John Dillinger and his gang had the epic shoot out with the F.B.I.  The second trip is known as the Hall of Fame Run.  This ride will take you to the Snowmobile Hall of Fame and it is surely something you don’t want to miss out on.  The last trail ride that we recommend is the Lunch Run which takes you North of Land O’ Lakes and you can enjoy a great lunch at the Black Oak Inn.

If you have any questions please give us a call here at the Wild Eagle Lodge and we would be happy to assist you.

Klondike Days Festival in Eagle River, WI

Klondike Days Festival in Eagle River, WI

Klondike Days weekend is here! If you are looking for something to do this weekend Klondike Days is a great family festival. For more information about Klondike Days you can visit their website. Wild Eagle Lodge is offering great weekend specials, visit our Last Minute Deals page for more information. I was out riding yesterday and the trails were in good to great condition for the most part with stretches where they were in fair condition. The temperatures were in the low 30′s, so by the afternoon the trails were a little soft. Don’t worry though the cold temperatures at night re-freeze the trails and allow for the groomers to go out. Also if you are looking for a place to spend the Easter holiday come up and visit us here at Wild Eagle Lodge. We have a great Easter Package and will be having an Easter egg hunt on the holiday weekend for the kids to enjoy.

Have a great weekend – Justin

Here is the official Eagle River Snowmobile Trail Report:

It was 10 degrees this morning with sun. Trails right now are in GOOD condition.

Groomers were out again last night in Sno-Eagles Country. The drivers just got in and reported no problem areas. Log hauling continues on Trail 10/13 so as I have been reporting that area is icy and thin on snow. This is only the section where Trail 10 and 13 runs together.

The hard frozen snow base is in place with loose SNOW on top. With the sun out today conditions will vary from trail to trail. We will have to wait & see how things fair at the end of the day.

Catfish Lake Loop and Eagle Lake Trail are both smooth and covered with lots of SNOW. Stay by the orange marker barrels.

Great Trail Conditions In Eagle River

Great trail conditions in the Eagle River Area

Great trail conditions in the Eagle River Area

It’s Thursday and the trails in Eagle River are in GOOD to EXCELLENT condition. New Snow over the last few days and the return to COLD temperatures have improved the trails even more.

Full grooming schedule continued last night. Hard frozen snow base with loose snow on top. The hard snow base is icy in many areas so slow down not only in the corners, but everywhere. Even if you have picks on your track. Remember to stay on your side of the trail.

Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trail in Sno-Eagles Country are safe by the orange reflective barrels. Snow covered and very few rough stops if any.

Log hauling continues on Trail 10/13 west of the snowmobile bridge. Virgil & Kevin from Iowa rode out in that area & told me that they would rate it as FAIR. That’s a great improvement.

Pond Hockey Championships starts Friday on Dollar Lake by the Chanticleer. You can ride there by sled using Trail 10E to Trail 1 which runs alongside of Dollar Lake Rd.

THINK SNOW & COLD!

See ya on the trails!

Well it was a cold weekend here in Eagle River which helped the base on the trails. What we have heard is that the trails range from poor in town all the way to fair and good once you get out of town. The groomers have been out every night keeping them in shape, but we could use a few inches of snow. The forecast says we are supposed to see some snow later tonight and then a 40% chance of snow ALL DAY TOMORROW!!! Yes, I capitalized it because I am excited. A few inches of fresh snow with the base we have and these trails will be in great shape in no time. We are also supposed to see snow starting again Friday through the weekend with temperatures back into the normal range of highs in the 20’s and lows in the teens to single digits. As a snowmobiler I could not think of a better forecast, and with the snow in the forecast I am really looking forward to my weekly ride on Wednesday, I’ll let you know firsthand how the trails are doing Thursday. I’ll try to stop along the way to get a few more pictures so you can see what the trails are like.

Justin’s Snowmobile Ride

Yesterday I went out and put 100 miles on the old Polaris and I was pleasantly surprised by the trail conditions. We started off just north of Eagle River and headed up 13, the trails close to town were in poor condition. The groomers have been out and the trails were flat for the most part, but could use some snow. The conditions improved once we got to the trail 13 loop and out towards Conover. Again, in Conover close to the city and the 45/12 intersection the trails were in fair to poor condition. However, once we hit 8 the trails were measurably better and went from fair to good conditions with long stretches where we were riding on smooth white snow. We turned around in Boulder Junction and headed back the same way until we got close to Eagle River and we took 3 back into town. The same story repeated itself, the closer we got into town the conditions fell off. There were stretches of 3 that were in good shape, especially were there was not heavy tree cover and the new snow fell on the trails. Overall it was a great day of riding and everyone in the group was surprised by how good the trails were and impressed with what the groomers did with what they had to work with. This morning I talked with some guests who had been out and they said the same thing about heading towards Phelps, once you got out of town and the heavily used trails the conditions improved.

If you are looking for a good ride though I would recommend going out on 8 towards Boulder Junction, round trip is going to be just less than 100 miles. If you are looking for a longer loop stay on trail 8 and head out to Manitowish Waters and stop by the Little Bohemia Lodge and take in some Dillinger history. As many of you may know the movie Public Enemies had a few scenes shot right at the Little Bohemia, not to mention it’s a great spot to stop and grab lunch. Round trip for this ride will be about 140 to 150 miles; I’m going to try to make that run next week. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Wild Eagle Lodge after a snow storm

Wild Eagle Lodge after a snow storm

I am going to hop on the old Polaris on Wednesday and put a few miles on. I’ll give you a full report on what I find on Thursday morning for the weekend. Check out the snowmobile trail update from the Sno-Eagles below.

Here is a trail update from the Sno-Eagles:

Monday morning and we do have new snow in Eagle River. Overall the trails are in FAIR condition, especially away from town and in the big woods. The way it snowed yesterday we should have a foot on the ground, but it was very wet and moisture filled. We ended up with 2-3 new inches of snow on the ground. It is snowing again this morning.

Temperature will continue to drop all day. Eight degrees for an overnight temperature with a high of thirteen tomorrow and below zero tomorrow night. This will continue all week.

Trail Boss Tom will fire up the groomers tonight. All 100 miles of trails in Sno-Eagles Country will be panned tonight. The old crusty snow is now covered with new wet snow. The wet snow breaks down that crusty stuff allowing the panning to really smooth things out. The cold coming in will set up the trails so that any snow we get will show more & more improvement to the trails.

Hard to rate the trails, all sorts of conditions out there. Fair is what I am going to average them out. In town they are poor. All trails are icy.

Keep doing the SNOW DANCE & THINK COLD! I can’t hear you! Let’s keep that sun under wraps too!

See ya on the trails!

Follow these links to see the full list of winners for both the Ice Oval events as well as the Sno-Cross events (Oval Races | Sno-Cross Races). The warm weather did not help the snowmobile trails much, but the groomers were out last night and there is snow in the forecast for later in the week.
