During the summer months Eagle River is bustling with commotion and things to do with your family. You can take a stroll down Wall Street and do a little window shopping or maybe stop by the Country Store for a hand dipped ice cream cone. Take the family on a canoe or tube trip down the Wisconsin River for a memorable day together enjoying the great outdoors. The opportunities are endless, which is why “What should I do with my family?” is one of the most common questions we are asked. To help you out a little we put together a list of some of our favorite summer activities as well as some that our guests have really enjoyed.

Horseback riding – Rocking W Stables and Pine Point Stables are just minutes from the resort and offer great options for horseback riding. They both have trails that wind through the woods that will make your family’s excursion one to remember.

Amusement Parks – Kart-Way and Elmer’s Fun Park offer a wide variety of family fun, from go-carts to mini golf and a number of other activities, you are sure to find something for everyone in the family to enjoy. Kart-Way is located just minutes from the resort and Elmer’s is about 15 minutes away.

Golf – There are a number of golf courses in the area, varying in difficulty. It will be no problem to find the one that is right for you.

Pirates Hide-Away – Located just down the shore from the resort, Pirates Hide-Away offers an ice cream shop, tiki bar, and most importantly of all, Pirate Ship Rides!

Bond Falls – Located about 40 minutes north of the resort, Bond Falls offers a great opportunity for you and your family to see some of the natural beauty of the Northwoods. You can take your family for a hike around the various falls on the well-marked trails, or just have a great photo-op by the main falls.

These are just a few of the activities that you and your family can enjoy while you are staying with us here at the Wild Eagle Lodge. If you would like more information on any of these activities or would like a few more option, please give one of our Northwoods vacation experts a call.

You want your vacation to be something the family remembers for a lifetime. It shouldn’t be a stress for you to plan. Here are our top five tips from the Northwoods Vacation Experts at Wild Eagle Lodge:

Make a list. As a family decide what are the top things you want; such as, a lake view, a sandy beach, next to a mall, a place to fish, etc.

Do the Research. You probably have a good idea of the area or city you want to visit. The Internet is the best tool to search with. Checkout the area Chamber of Commerce website and the different lodging options in the area. Trip Advisor is a good place to find actual guest comments. Social network sites like Facebook will give you more pictures and information.

Decide on dates to travel. What dates can your family travel and for how long? Do you want to take a long weekend or a week vacation?

Call and check online for the best rates.Sometimes you can find a great online special for the dates you want to travel, but it doesn’t hurt to call and ask too. When calling ask for any specials they may be running or if a day or week later might change the rate. Changing your trip by day or week may make a big savings to you.

Ask Questions! Most importantly ask questions to make sure this place will be a perfect fit for your family. Ask about the lodging so you know what to expect, but also ask about the amenities and things to do while you are there. Ask what there is to do with a 5 year old or a teenager so you know the kids will enjoy their trip. This is where your list from step one is helpful to make sure all your needs are met. Once you decide this is the place for you make the reservations.

If you have any further questions about planning your next family vacation give us a call. We’d be happy to help you ensure that your vacation is one to remember.

Spring time is a great time to visit our northwoods for a relaxing getaway before the busy time of summer. If shopping is on your list you can find the perfect northwoods treasure for your home or cabin while strolling along the charming streets of Eagle River. Area merchants offer a wide variety of quality handmade crafts and quilts, rare antiques and more. From books to clothes to sweet confections, you’ll find something for every style and taste.

While out shopping you may want to take time to tour the Three Lakes Winery where you will be able to observe the making and bottling of the flavorful Fruit of the Woods Wine, browse through the winery’s gourmet gift shop and enjoy free wine tasting.

Dining variety abounds in the Eagle River area and we are famous for our warm Northwoods hospitality. If you are looking for a quick meal for the family or an elegant dining experience for a romantic evening, we offer many choices. Feast as the lumber barons did years ago. Enjoy a popular all-you-can-eat Friday Night Fish Fry. Great food in a beautiful Northwoods setting always seems just a little bit better.

For families we invite you to make a stop at The Northwoods Children’s Museum where children enjoy hands-on opportunities and a variety of exhibits. A special day will be April 17 when The Easter Bunny will be visiting the museum from noon to 3:00 PM.

Another family activity would be to attend Eagle River’s annual Silver Blades Ice Show which will be held April 9-10 at the Ice Arena. It is guaranteed to be a talented and colorful show featuring area skaters of all ages. Shows are scheduled at 2:00 PM on both Saturday and Sunday with an evening show at 7:00 PM on Saturday.

If you are an outdoor enthusiast we offer some great hiking and biking trails in our area which provide safe, alternative routes connecting area communities. Not only will you enjoy the ride or hike but take to enjoy nature as spring is in bloom. After a refreshing day out in our northwoods you may enjoy a springtime campfire near our shoreline at our large fire pits.

The 14th Annual Ice Masters Classic 3 on 3 Tournament will be played this coming weekend. This is a fast paced half ice game that is a real hit among players of all ages and spectators too. This is the 14th year for this event and is the biggest and longest running 3 on 3 tournament in Wisconsin. This year there are 78 teams from all over the state that will play 165 games on two sheets of ice. You will find a Mite, Squirt, Pee Wee, Bantam, and Girls U14 brackets.

The game is similar to that of a half court basketball game and is played at a very fast pace. A game consists of three six-minute periods. When the teams change possession, the puck must be cleared outside the blue line with all players touching up prior to becoming involved in the offensive play. The goalies compete as individuals and see a lot of action. A record was set last year when a Pee Wee goalie faced 62 shots during one game. All teams are guaranteed 3 games but can play up to 7 games. Individual trophies are awarded to teams for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each bracket. There is also a loser’s bracket that they call the Thumper Bowl which also gets trophies. The first three goalies in each division are awarded trophies too for there individual performance. Last year nearly a third of the players went home with trophies.

Klondike Days is just a week away here in Eagle River. This is the 21st year for the event which celebrates Wisconsin’s history of logging and fur trading. The living encampments give a glimpse into the past as you see how the people who settled the state lived there lives. You can see how the fur traders, pioneers, and Native Americans survived in the Wisconsin wilderness. You can also see some of the logging history through events like the lumberjack competition and horse log pull, just to name a few. This is a great way for the whole family to spend a day and learn a little about our history. The event also offers a unique opportunity for you to engage your kids in learning about history. There are also plenty of other activities including an arts and craft show and a blue grass festival. Your children will also enjoy the pony and horse rides, dog sled rides, and coloring contest. Take a sleigh ride through the woods or a quick hay ride around the event to cap a fun filled day.

As we head into the spring and summer seasons in the Northwoods, wedding tours continue to be a popular inquiry. The crisp and clean smell of the spring season keeps love in the air and weddings on the minds of newly engaged couples. Many happy couples like to start planning their most important day as much as one to two years in advance. A common question I receive is – what makes weddings unique at Wild Eagle Lodge? Each bride and groom have their own vision as to what they want to experience on their wedding day. Our desire is to fulfill that vision and make their day as beautiful and as memorable as possible!

In addition to our dedicated staff and breathtaking scenery, our resort has a variety of events both at the resort and in the surrounding areas to help make a wedding day extra special. For example, one of our recent summer weddings was scheduled the same weekend as the Antique and Wooden Boat Show. Having both events scheduled the same weekend provided a unique touch for the bride and groom’s special day. After the wedding couple, Kjirsti and Austin, exchanged their wedding vows in front of their family and friends; there was a little spare time before their reception started. A few of the antique and wooden boat owners decided to give Kjirsti and Austin, along with their wedding party, rides in their vintage boats on the Chain of 28 Lakes. This adventure made for a spectacular photo opportunity and added some extra joy to their wedding day. What a fantastic unplanned memory for the two of them! Afterwards, Kjirsti and Austin joined their guests under the large tent decorated with pink and green Chinese lanterns for a fun–filled night and colorful celebration.

We take pride in all that we have to offer our wedding guests during their stay. In fact, some of the guests extend their stays and many others return for a future vacation with their friends or families.

The 6th Annual USA Hockey Labatt’s Blue Pond Hockey Championships are just around the corner. The pucks are set to start dropping at 9am on February 11th, 2011 to kick this three day event. Eagle River, the Hockey Capital of Wisconsin, will once again play host to this spectacular event which takes hockey back to its roots. How many of us spent our winter break playing pickup games on the local pond? No goalies, no boards, no blue lines, this is the hockey we grew up with.

Every year this event gets larger and larger: in 2006 it started with 46 teams from 11 different states. This year over 250 teams from 22 states will hit the ice on Dollar Lake. That works out to around 1,750 hockey players competing in 15 divisions. The volunteer fire department will soon be clearing 24 rinks and getting them ready to host the 480 games that will make up this year’s competition. If you like hockey and want a glimpse into your past, stop by and watch a few games. You won’t be disappointed; you may just go home and dust off your skates.
