Happy Halloween

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Happy Halloween!! It was snowing this morning in Eagle River, should be a chilly one for trick or treating. A few die hard fishermen went out on a hunt for muskie this morning. I am awaiting a report from them. They tell me the fish don’t mind this weather. The deer hunters are welcoming the cooler weather and tracking snow for November. Don’t forget we have a great quiet season special running through December 20th. You’ll want to take advantage of that if you are up hunting or plan to visit for Thanksgiving. Have a great last day of October.

Muskie Matt Fishing at Wild Eagle Lodge

Muskie Matt Fishing at Wild Eagle Lodge

House fishing guide, Muskie Matt, gave me a quick fishing update:

water temps are holding in the low 40′s to high 30′s range on the ER Chain and other area lakes. Usual baits working like glide, jerk, and crank baits. I would probably lean towards the crankbaits worked in an erratic motion. That’s been giving me the best results. Kentuck Lake has been a “go to” lake this fall, fish have been very active over there. The live sucker bite is on but I’ve been taking most my fish on artificials.

Good Luck to all the fishermen.

Trivia Question

Bald Eagle

Bald Eagle

As I watched a bald eagle soar over the property today, I thought what better of a trivia question than one about the bald eagle. So my question is: How many feathers does a bald eagle have? The first person to email the correct answer to me will receive 10% off any new reservation with us. I’ll post the answer to the question as soon as I receive the winning answer.

Good job Dawn! A bald eagle has 7,192 feathers. This includes wing feathers as well as the contour and down feathers that cover the head and body.

927 wedding 014

Well we have come to the end of another wedding season here at the Wild Eagle Lodge and it was a great one. For the most part all the brides & grooms had great weather, there were a few rain drops on one of the weddings but there’s not much you can do about that. We will be posting the wedding schedule for next year on the website soon so you will be able to see when we are hosting weddings here on the property. If you know of anyone who is looking for a place to hold a wedding let us know, Wild Eagle Lodge is a great place to make memories. We sent the wedding season out with a bang last week and the staff here at Wild Eagle Lodge would like to wish Shelly and Ben a lifetime of happiness and luck. Hope everyone had a good weekend; it was a great one in the Northwoods to stay inside and watch football.

Talk to you soon,

Justin

The wind has been blowing here in Eagle River so a lot of the leaves have fallen off of the trees, but there are still a few trees that still have their leaves.

Players at the 2009 USA Pond Hockey Championship

Players at the 2009 USA Pond Hockey Championship

To go along with the changing of the colors here at Wild Eagle Lodge we also see a changing of activities in the fall. Gone are the days of lying by the beach, water skiing, or enjoying a warm day out on the water. But not to worry a whole new variety of activities and sports are just beginning to start. Bow hunting season is underway and the gun opener is just a few short weeks from us. There are a number of winter activities that Eagle River is well known for including ice fishing, skiing and snowshoeing, and of course being the Snowmobile Capitol of the World. One that you may not know about is hockey. Eagle River plays host to a number of youth hockey tournaments over the winter as teams from around the state come to play in the dome, we look forward to seeing all the teams that have stayed with us in the past and some new ones as well. One new event that has grown faster than anyone expected is the USA Pond Hockey Championship. This year this event will bring in over 200 teams from across the nation to Eagle River area and Wild Eagle Lodge. This is a great event to both participate in and be a spectator for, there are 20+ rinks cleared off a local lake and you get to see some great hockey action all weekend long. If you are taking part in the tournament or want to come see what it is all about let us know – we are filling up fast.

Peak Colors in Eagle River, WI

Some of the fall colors around Wild Eagle Lodge

Some of the fall colors around Wild Eagle Lodge

Well the time I have been waiting for is finally here, we have hit peak color at Wild Eagle Lodge.  The trees are ablaze with yellow, red, and orange. We are going to have some nice fall weather in the upcoming week with most days in the low to mid 40’s, perfect weather for a hike or bike ride in the woods. This is my favorite time of the year in Eagle River as I spend my days away from Wild Eagle out on my bike enjoying some of the great trails thru the national forests in the area and taking in all the beautiful scenery that the Northwoods has to offer. This is followed by one of my least favorite activities, raking up all of the leaves after they fall. I figure that this is a worthy price to pay.

Talk to you soon,

Snowmobiling On My Mind

One of our guests last winter down by Duck Lake

One of our guests last winter down by Duck Lake

Well since we had our first snow storm of the season here at Wild Eagle Lodge I thought I would get everybody in the mood for the snowmobile season. I have added a link for an episode of American Snowmobiler from a few years ago when they did a special on the World Championship Derby here in Eagle River. You just have to select it from the panel of shows they have available, the episode is named snowmobile derby. I am looking forward to this year’s season and hoping to put a few hundred miles on the old Polaris this winter. I guess it’s time to get the sled all set to go for the year before the weather gets too cold, I always wait until the season starts to do this and end up outside in the cold changing spark plugs and all the other yearly maintenance that needs to be done. This year I am going to try and be smart about it and get it done when it’s 60 out, not 10. More than likely I’ll be taking a quick ride to Wild Eagle and use the heated snowmobile garage for a few minutes to work on my sled. For all of you near the southern part of the state we will have a booth at the Snowmobile USA show this weekend in Milwaukee WI, if you are in the neighborhood stop on by and say hi. It’s a great time to get some gear or parts you need, plan the perfect trip, or buy a whole new sled. We hope to see you there.
