Ice Shanty Parade in Eagle River

shanty

Yesterday Wild Eagle Lodge took part in the Ice Shanty Parade downtown Eagle River and welcoming Santa to town. I guess it helped ring in the season because this morning I woke up to snow covering everything. The resort is looking festive with the holiday lights sparkling off the fresh snow. I personally still have decorating and shopping to get done. I will be hitting downtown Eagle River this Friday the 4th for “Late to 8″ shopping to get those unique northwoods gifts.

Wild Eagle Lodge Fishing Update

Muskie Matt Fishing at Wild Eagle Lodge

Muskie Matt Fishing at Wild Eagle Lodge

Here’s a fishing update from our house guide Muskie Matt: As we near the close of yet another good muskie season we’re finding water temps are running 44-38 depending on the lake or area of a lake you’re fishing. Much warmer than normal water temps have made muskie hunting a roll of the dice. I’ve found a pattern that is usually good earlier in the fall to still be producing fish, with good consistancy. ALL my fish over the last two weeks have come on artificial baits. Not one hit on a live sucker. They’ve been swimming right by the sucker and hitting the artificial baits, weird huh? I’m still running live suckers but what an added cost… hmmmmm. Baits of choice are crankbaits worked in a pull/pause motion like jerkbaits, jerkbaits themselves, and what I call “messy baits” or those that have a very erratic pattern to their retrieve such as Reef Hogs or Undertakers. The last few days of muskie season should prove interesting with slightly colder weather moving in… hear us talking live every Sunday evening at 7pm about our area fishing on RFRG Outdoors at MuskieMatt.com, …stay tuned we’ll wrap up the season tomorrow night for you.

Thanks Matt.

Happy Thanksgiving

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!!!!  My day will be spent here at Wild Eagle Lodge welcoming guests who travel to the northwoods for the holiday. I think I’ve only missed one Thanksgiving here since we’ve opened. Many of the guests have become kinda like family and it is great to see the familar faces.  Lou from Eagle Cleaners of Minoqua keeps me company every year as he cleans the office carpets. We always have the Packers vs Lions football game on the tv.  I am originally from Michigan so I like to cheer for the Lions on this day just to ruffle the feathers of all the Packers fans here.  After work I will join my family for our Thanksgiving Day feast and visiting with those I haven’t seen in awhile. Happy Thanksgiving and safe travels.

Thanksgiving

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

The grocery stores are busy as everyone is preparing for Thanksgiving this week. I noticed the numerous restaurants in the paper that advertised they will be serving a Thanksgiving feast. For me it’s not the feast but the family and friends that gather that makes this holiday so grand. Don’t get me wrong the smell of homemade turkey and stuffing puts a smile on my face too. If you are traveling our way we still have rooms open and a great special running. We wish everyone safe travels to and from there holiday destination.

On a side note, congratulations to our guests that got bucks this past opening weekend of deer season.

Gun opener tomorrow

Wild Eagle Lodge

Wild Eagle Lodge

The rifle deer season opens tomorrow at sunrise, we want to thank all of the hunters who are staying with us for choosing Wild Eagle Lodge. We also want to wish everyone who is taking part in this annual tradition a safe and productive season. The weather will be a little warmer than we are used to with highs in the 50′s. This will make the deer a little harder to spot but it looks like things are going to start to cool down next weekend for the closing of the season. We have a great hunter’s special going on right now if you are interested in coming up for either weekend. Have a great weekend everybody, and remember to be safe in the woods.

Thinking About Winter

Winter Creek

Winter Creek

I am sitting here looking out the office window to a 45 degree rainy November day. Which I have to admit is a little unusual for this time of year. The hunters are arriving with hopes the rain will turn over to snow for tracking. I too am thinking snow would be nicer than rain. I can’t wait for the beautiful white blanket to cover the northwoods. I’m day dreaming about sledding with my kids, making a snowman and snowshoeing through the forest.  Christmas is right around the corner by then it should be a winter wonderland. We look forward to the snowmobile trails opening mid December. Keep thinking snow.

Justin at Wild Eagle Lodge

Each month we will be profiling a staff member in order for you to get to know the Wild Eagle Lodge family better. This month’s lucky staff member is Justin:

Justin Behling is our front desk manager. He’s been working at Wild Eagle Lodge since 2005. He’s originally from Northern Illinois and moved to the northwoods in 2001. When Justin is not at work he enjoys many of the activities available in the Eagle River area. During the summer months you can catch him out on the local golf courses trying his best not to hit the trees, or out on the lakes enjoying the water. During the winter months you’ll find him putting as many miles on his Polaris as he can. If you are looking to make the perfect golf trip or snowmobiling vacation Justin is the person to talk to.
