Great Activities in Eagle River, WI

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Fall brings with it a few rainy days, but it that won’t spoil a visit to Eagle River.

One of my family favorites is the Northwood’s Children’s Museum. It offers interactive exhibits with a hands-on environment where children can play, explore and learn while having fun. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself engaged in some of this play and exploration too!

Just a short drive outside of Eagle River is the Three Lakes Winery. They produce fruit wines and are best known for their Cranberry wine. Visitors can see wine being made during a winery tour, sip a sample and shop the gourmet gift shop. This is also a kid friendly tour.

Eagle River has a lot of interesting history behind it. Stop in the Eagle River Historical Museum to find artifacts from the railroads, logging camps, and Native Americans that used to be in this area.

Along with this history you may be surprised to find that the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame is in Eagle River. The first high school hockey team was formed in 1926 in order to promote winter tourism in Eagle River. Shortly after, in 1933, a wood dome stadium was built and still stands and operates today. This is the home of the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame, which honors outstanding individuals responsible for the development, growth and success of amateur ice hockey in the state of Wisconsin.

Try one of these indoor attractions in the area on you next visit to Wild Eagle Lodge.

Great Fall Fun in Eagle River, WI

Monday, October 18th, 2010

Fall is one of the most spectacular times of the year here in the Northwoods.  The colors are changing, the air is becoming crisp, and the activities in the area are booming.  This season, one of the best ways to see the colors and enjoy the beautiful Northwoods is to visit the great hiking/biking trails.  The Three Eagle Trail is one of our favorites and offers a variety of trails and scenery, with a wonderful tour of the fall colors and a safe way to exercise. The trail starts at the town of Three Lakes and brings you into the City of Eagle River. While on your ride from one end to the other, you will be able to view cranberry marshes, lakes, woodland, and the wildlife that the great “up North” offers. Starting in Three lakes you will be on a surface for about 8.4 miles that is made of crushed limestone.  Then you will hit phase two of the trail which is on Sundstein Rd. and goes on for approximately 8.3 miles.  Not sure if you want to do the whole trail in one day?  No worries because there are three different locations where you are able to park your car and get started on your adventure at that point on the trail. Other great trails that are surrounding the area are; Anvil, Nicolet North, and Franklin Lake

After you conquer a trail and you are ready for an even more magnificent view, head up to Bond Falls, Mich.to see some amazing waterfalls.  There is roadside parking available as well as picnic areas for you to have a nice lunch. At the top of the falls, and alongside the paths, you will be able to walk out onto six different accessible platforms to get a little closer to those beautiful falls.  While following the hiking trail, you can get extraordinary views of the waterfalls and the fall colors reflecting off of them.

Another great way to feel the crisp morning air is to head out to one of our Northwoods golf courses.  Surrounding Eagle River we have a total of eight golf courses that are all within forty minutes of the resort.  Each golf course offers a variety of challenging holes and stunning scenery.  Wild Eagle Lodge loves to make our guests stay a special one, so don’t forget to ask about our golf packages and the great fall specials that we are offering.

Another reason why we love fall is because that means that it’s time for Halloween festivities!  Enjoy not only a safe environment for trick-or-treating, but also the fun activities in the community as well.  The local Children’s Museum in Eagle River is hosting a Night at the Museum, which is a free event on October 29th that offers Halloween fun to everyone.  Following just a few days later is the Eagle River Lions Club 60th annual Hallogras children’s Halloweens party.  This will take place on October 31st and it is located at Northland Pines Middle School.  This time of the year is a great time for a family vacation, or just a quick getaway for the weekend.  The Northwoods is an exceptional area to be during the fall and we would love for you to enjoy your visit with us here at the Wild Eagle Lodge.

Eagle River Celebrates its 31st Annual Cranberry Fest!

Monday, October 11th, 2010

The first weekend in October has reigned for 30 years as “Cranberry Fest Weekend” in Eagle River; this year more than 40,000 attended the fall event. Cranberry Fest has something for everyone – an arts and crafts show with more than 300 business participants, cranberry food sales, family fun, entertainment, cranberry bog and winery tours throughout the weekend. More than 10,000 pounds of local premium fresh cranberries were sold during the weekend. Something new this year is was the Market Place which was held at the Derby Track. And another big highlight from this past weekend was the fitness weekend which invites any interested participants to join in the run, walk, and bike ride – all the proceeds went to support the efforts of the local Eagle River hospital cardiac rehabilitation program.

Another special feature of the Cranberry Fest is the Make-A-Wish foundation fund raiser which features the world’s largest cheesecake, which has appeared for the past 19 years at the festival.

While there were many activities at the Vilas County Fairgrounds during Cranberry Fest, there were also plenty of attractions in downtown Eagle River. The festivities included a farmers market, an antique show and a food stand, all within a few feet of dozens of unique shops in downtown Eagle River. In addition, a shuttle bus provided transportation between the fairgrounds and downtown all weekend.

Other fun events that took place this weekend included a book fair at The Olson Library in Eagle River, pancake breakfasts, a fund raiser/spaghetti dinner sponsored by the Normarka Ski club, and various live music performances that kept feet tapping!

The Cranberry Fest has an incredible number of enthusiastic volunteers who give graciously of their time and talents who help make this all possible. If you missed Cranberry Fest this year, be sure to give us a call so you don’t miss next year’s festival.

Great Food in Eagle River, WI

Friday, October 1st, 2010

Fall is a great time to come and enjoy the Eagle River area for festivals, colors, and food. There are numerous options in the area when it comes to restaurants. From family places to steak houses and fine dining establishments, there is something for everyone in Eagle River, Wis.

Start your day off with a visit to the Friendship House or Leif’s Café; these are the best breakfast spots in town. They both serve breakfast all day and with a wide variety on their menus, you’re sure to find something for the taste buds. After breakfast head on out to Bond Falls and see one of the most impressive waterfalls in Michigan. The main falls drop is 40 feet high and more than 100 feet wide and above that are a series of cascades and rapids that must drop a total of 20 feet. This newly renovated site has a level boardwalk that leads you to prime views of the falls and is accessible to everyone. There are trails on the east side of the falls with some steep rocky climbs or try the other, calmer trails off into the woods.

After a day of hiking enjoying the great outdoors, settle down for some fine dining here in Eagle River. According to Discover Wisconsin, one of the best places to go, due to their outstanding food, service and atmosphere, is the Riverstone Restaurant & Tavern. The restaurant is located right on the water offering beautiful views and a great menu. They offer something for everyone:  Great pizza, fish, steak, pasta, and vegetarian entrées. Two of my favorites are the blackened Alaskan salmon and their grilled Angus New York strip with basil butter. All of the entrées come with steamed vegetables and fresh baked artisan hearth breads.

A unique feature of the Riverstone is the vast selection of wines that they offer. Riverstone has won the Wine Enthusiast Magazine’s Award of Distinction as “one of the most wine friendly restaurants in the Nation.”  They have also been awarded with Wine Spectator Magazine’sAward of Excellence for being “one of the best restaurants in the world for wine lovers.” Riverstone also has a wonderful Sunday brunch with a lot of variety. Many brunches have a few items to choose from – at Riverstone there is a large room filled with all sorts of different foods.  You’ll love everything from eggs and bacon to fresh fruit, steak, and most everything in between.

There are a number of other great establishments to visit in the area that offer great Italian food, seafood, and steaks. So while you’re up in the northwoods enjoying the beautiful scenery, and landscapes, don’t forget to stop and enjoy the food too. Give us a call today and we would be happy to help you plan your perfect fall getaway, right down to the dinner recommendations.
