The Wild Eagle Lodge team wants to send out holiday wishes to our friends and loyal guests and hope that you all have a safe and wonderful holiday season.  Like us here at the resort, we are sure that you will all be spending the holidays surrounded by family and food! 

The staff all plan on spending time with relatives and friends but a few of us will also be celebrating by riding our sleds on the beautiful trails.  Every holiday season up north is a memorable one.              At the Wild Eagle Lodge, we look forward to bringing in the New Year and we would love to share that with you!  Come and celebrate with us at our on-site bar and lounge, Boondocker’s.  We will have fun and music going all night long and can guarantee that you will have a great time. 

            Don’t worry about having to drive in the snow after midnight because you will be able to walk to your cozy lodge home right from Boondocker’s.  Make sure to call and make your reservation or book it online, also don’t forget to ask about our special New Year’s Eve package that we have available.  It is a beautiful time here in the Northwoods and we don’t want you to miss out.

One of the most beautiful winter attractions in Eagle River each year is the Ice Castle. It is created in January by local firefighters and volunteers. They cut 12 inch thick ice blocks from a local lake and haul them downtown and in just a couple days, they assemble a structure that is more than 20 feet tall and illuminate it with lights. Every year the design is different from the past.

The Ice Castle has been built almost every year for the past 80. It is on schedule to be built again this winter, weather permitting, so make a trip to Eagle River, Wis. this winter by car or snowmobile. Make sure to pack your camera and make a stop to see this breath taking sight.

            This is one of the most beautiful times of the year in Northern Wisconsin.  There are numerous events that take place during the winter in Eagle River and our team at Wild Eagle Lodge  would be happy to share them with you.

            This winter there are three big events in Eagle River that spread out from January through March, which means that there is never a dull moment in the Northwood’s.  January kicks things off with the 2011 World Championship Derby ,taking place January 7-16.  The derby’s activities include a Vintage Classic, followed by the Amsoil Snowmobile Championship that starts on the 13^th.  Both of these events are some of the highest ranking winter sports in the Midwest and are recognized around the world.

The fun continues into with the 6^th Annual Labatt Blue USA Adult Pond Hockey Championship, taking place February 11-13.  This is an event that brings people together on the ice for some old fashion fun. Join the 4-on-4 hockey championships created on Dollar Lake with 24 rinks and 200 teams. You won’t want to miss it.

As March approaches, so does the 21^st Annual Klondike Days, which is also known as one of the best family winter activity in Wisconsin. This is a great  family. Come and enjoy the turn of the century encampment, dog pulls, craft show, and much more.  Klondike Days takes place on March 5-6.  All of these great events are close to us here at Wild Eagle Lodge, so if you want to stay close to the action, give us a call.

            Another great thing about winter in Eagle River is all the activities you can do outside while enjoying the fresh crisp winter air.  Here at Wild Eagle Lodge we are happy to offer our very own snowshoe trail, and don’t forget to look at our special packages that include snowshoes.  There are also a variety of other trails you can enjoy that are within minutes from the Lodge. 

We are also located on the Chain of Lakes, so for you ice fishermen the lake is right out your back door.  Not only do you have an absolutely gorgeous view from your window, you also have a short walk to set up those tip-ups.  Wild Eagle Lodge enjoys ice fishing so much that we are happy to offer our guests the Ice Fishing School package, so come and join us for the great adventures on the lakes. 

We are also big lovers of one of the most favored recreational activities in the Northwood’s, which of course is snowmobiling.  With the trails surrounding our area we put together snowmobile packages that accommodate our guests.  You can wake up and walk right out to your snowmobile and head out for the day, then when you return you can warm up next to the fireplace in your condo.

  This is a great time to book a Northwoods vacation, as the post-Thanksgiving holiday season kicks in.

  Kick-off your holiday season during these special days, Friday and Saturday, November 26-27, 2010, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Plan on a visit to our Northwoods Children’s Museum and visit with Tom, their live turkey.  There will be a kid’s turkey calling contest and special holiday crafts for both children and adults.

  Another fun event at our museum is Santa Saturday on December 4^th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Santa will arrive at noon to visit with children, listen to their wishes and hand out treats.  Holiday workshops will allow kids to make crafts to use as decorations or gifts. 

  In our downtown/business district you can enjoy the city’s annual Christmas Kick-Off.  This will be held at 1 p.m. in downtown Eagle River.  We invite you to join us in parading with Santa and his reindeer.   “Shop Late to 8” starting Friday, December 3; Eagle River stores are open until 8 p.m. on Friday’s through December for your convenience.

  Sleigh rides are also a favorite during the holidays!  They are held in our downtown area on Saturdays in December (December 4, 11, and 18) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Enjoy some great scenery while riding in our sleigh.

  This year Eagle River will be holding the 2^nd Annual Ice Shanty Contest on Saturday November 27, at 1 p.m.  Area residents will be showing off their “home away from home” for a chance to win prizes for the best Christmas designed shanty. Come join in this fun experience!

  For the snowmobile enthusiasts, the Sno-Eagles’s Club will be providing guided snowmobile trail rides every Wednesday from December through March.  Interested persons should plan to meet at the old Train Depot in Eagle River where the rides will leave at 9 a.m.

Fall brings with it a few rainy days, but it that won’t spoil a visit to Eagle River.

One of my family favorites is the Northwood’s Children’s Museum. It offers interactive exhibits with a hands-on environment where children can play, explore and learn while having fun. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself engaged in some of this play and exploration too!

Just a short drive outside of Eagle River is the Three Lakes Winery. They produce fruit wines and are best known for their Cranberry wine. Visitors can see wine being made during a winery tour, sip a sample and shop the gourmet gift shop. This is also a kid friendly tour.

Eagle River has a lot of interesting history behind it. Stop in the Eagle River Historical Museum to find artifacts from the railroads, logging camps, and Native Americans that used to be in this area.

Along with this history you may be surprised to find that the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame is in Eagle River. The first high school hockey team was formed in 1926 in order to promote winter tourism in Eagle River. Shortly after, in 1933, a wood dome stadium was built and still stands and operates today. This is the home of the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame, which honors outstanding individuals responsible for the development, growth and success of amateur ice hockey in the state of Wisconsin.

Fall is one of the most spectacular times of the year here in the Northwoods.  The colors are changing, the air is becoming crisp, and the activities in the area are booming.  This season, one of the best ways to see the colors and enjoy the beautiful Northwoods is to visit the great hiking/biking trails.  The Three Eagle Trail is one of our favorites and offers a variety of trails and scenery, with a wonderful tour of the fall colors and a safe way to exercise. The trail starts at the town of Three Lakes and brings you into the City of Eagle River. While on your ride from one end to the other, you will be able to view cranberry marshes, lakes, woodland, and the wildlife that the great “up North” offers. Starting in Three lakes you will be on a surface for about 8.4 miles that is made of crushed limestone.  Then you will hit phase two of the trail which is on Sundstein Rd. and goes on for approximately 8.3 miles.  Not sure if you want to do the whole trail in one day?  No worries because there are three different locations where you are able to park your car and get started on your adventure at that point on the trail. Other great trails that are surrounding the area are; Anvil, Nicolet North, and Franklin Lake. 

After you conquer a trail and you are ready for an even more magnificent view, head up to Bond Falls, Mich.to see some amazing waterfalls.  There is roadside parking available as well as picnic areas for you to have a nice lunch. At the top of the falls, and alongside the paths, you will be able to walk out onto six different accessible platforms to get a little closer to those beautiful falls.  While following the hiking trail, you can get extraordinary views of the waterfalls and the fall colors reflecting off of them.

 Another great way to feel the crisp morning air is to head out to one of our Northwoods golf courses.  Surrounding Eagle River we have a total of eight golf courses that are all within forty minutes of the resort.  Each golf course offers a variety of challenging holes and stunning scenery.  Wild Eagle Lodge loves to make our guests stay a special one, so don’t forget to ask about our golf packages and the great fall specials that we are offering.

Another reason why we love fall is because that means that it’s time for Halloween festivities!  Enjoy not only a safe environment for trick-or-treating, but also the fun activities in the community as well.  The local Children’s Museum in Eagle River is hosting a Night at the Museum, which is a free event on October 29th that offers Halloween fun to everyone.  Following just a few days later is the Eagle River Lions Club 60^th annual Hallogras children’s Halloweens party.  This will take place on October 31^st and it is located at Northland Pines Middle School.  This time of the year is a great time for a family vacation, or just a quick getaway for the weekend.  The Northwoods is an exceptional area to be during the fall and we would love for you to enjoy your visit with us here at the Wild Eagle Lodge.
